Job description
Working at Frontier Therapeutics Ltd as a KTP Associate offers a unique opportunity to apply advanced electronics engineering skills in an industrial setting. You will gain valuable exposure to regulatory standards for medical devices, working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while collaborating across two sites – the Tredegar head office and manufacturing facility, as well as the Cardiff Medicentre. This experience allows you to integrate knowledge to develop solutions compliant with medical device regulations, with direct access to the manufacturing site for a deeper understanding of production processes. Supported by both industrial and academic mentors, this role provides hands-on experience in research and knowledge exchange between Frontier Therapeutics and the University of York and University of Hull.
In addition to the exciting career development opportunities, Frontier offers a range of staff benefits to support your well-being and personal growth. These include Medicash membership, which provides access to a health cash plan, a Perkbox membership with a £5 monthly points allowance for a variety of discounts and perks, and an Employee Assistance Scheme for confidential support. Frontier also offers mortgage advice to help you make informed decisions about your home ownership journey, ensuring that both your professional and personal needs are supported.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The overall responsibility of the KTP Associate is to deliver a prototype medical device employing radiofrequency electronics to address key clinical challenges in the wound healing sector. This will include leading all aspects of the work plan agreed for the KTP including the delivery of outputs. Duties will include:
• To establish an electronics testing facility at Frontier Therapeutics R&D facility in Cardiff.
• To apply your knowledge of electronics and plasma science to develop a radio frequency plasma source suitable for the generation of low temperature plasma.
• To create a prototype medical device combining plasma generation, sensors and a control hardware that is compliant with the relevant medical device standards.
• To work collaboratively and synergistically with a second KTP associate, from the University of Hull with expertise in microbiology, to thoroughly evaluate the biological effects of the developed device.
• To facilitate effective knowledge exchange between Frontier Therapeutics and the academic partners.
• Liaise with the wider business and stakeholders to ensure that the detailed technical requirements are understood in the design phase and delivered in its implementation.
• Contribute to the KTP’s regular Local Management Committee meetings by presenting project updates, future plans and written summaries of progress to date.
• Manage the KTP budgets provided and efficiently deploy resources to meet project milestones.
• Actively demonstrate a commitment to professional development by continuing to advance knowledge, understanding and competencies
The above list of duties is not exhaustive and is subject to change. The post holder may be required to undertake other duties within the scope and grading of the post.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed
• MEng, MPhys, MSc or PhD in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or Plasma Science.
• Knowledge and experience in the development of radio frequency circuits operating in the HF band.
• Hands on experience designing, building and testing electrical circuits; specifically, RF electronics at moderate power levels.
• Knowledge and experience in microcontrollers, control system design, and sensor integration.
• Knowledge and experience of plasma generation hardware and diagnostic methods.
Project description
This KTP project is an exciting and rare opportunity to lead an interdisciplinary wound innovation project working at the interface between academia and industry. You will work closely with key Frontier Therapeutics staff, alongside a second KTP associate, while being supported by academic experts from Hull (Wound biology and translational models) and York (electronics and plasma science).
Working in synergy with the second KTP associate (microbiology) you will lead device development and support its evaluation in pre-clinical trials. The successful applicant for this KTP Associate role will be employed by the University of York and primarily based within Frontier Therapeutics at Cardiff Medicentre, Cardiff University Heath Park Campus
