Job description
JOB PURPOSE: To optimise asphalt waste recycling to develop high-value, sustainable materials, unlocking new revenue streams and reducing reliance on virgin resources.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Project manage the delivery of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership work plan (with extensive support from both company and academic supervisors), which includes the following tasks:
- Review RAP (recycled asphalt pavement) collection and processing data.
- Design and implement RAP chemical recycling processes.
- Conduct performance testing and ensure compliance with standards.
- Develop innovative recycling techniques.
- Prepare risk assessments and SOPs for recycling rigs.
- Coordinate testing schedules with technicians.
- Hazardous material capture and stabilisation.
- Energy valorisation of recycling process residues.
- Carrying out integrated techno-economic and environmental assessment.
- Developing a commercialisation strategy for Associated Asphalt.
- Communicate findings through reports, meetings and publications.
- Write journal articles, technical reports and conference papers.
- Attend industry and scientific events, present research findings and organise workshops.
This will be a fantastic role for someone with ambition to succeed in business and technology commercialisation.
You will require a minimum MSc in an Engineering discipline, (e.g. Chemical, Civil, Environmental) or in Materials Science, with a strong technical understanding of asphalt materials and recycling technologies and knowledge of the relevant British Standards.
You will bring an applied experience in advanced materials characterisation techniques and analytical techniques including FTIR, GC-MS, SEC, DSC, TGA. You must be competent in the design and execution of experimental protocols in chemical engineering labs.
We are keen to receive applications from candidates who have a commercial drive alongside their technical skillset as this will be developing and implementing a long term strategy for Associate Asphalt beyond the KTP.
Project description
Based at Associated Asphalt Head Office in Heathrow Boulevard, but working across their sites across the South East England, this role will lead the company strategy to introduce a progressive approach to reclaiming and reusing Reclaimed Asphalt (RAP). It will integrate advanced materials testing, circular economy principles and low-carbon technologies to develop safe and efficient methods for recovering aggregates and asphalt binder for reuse in road applications.

It installs around 250,000 tonnes of asphalt each year, mainly in airfields and highways.
