Job description
The duties of the post will include:
– Developing a customised chatbot, which will handle customer queries on a wide range of legal conveyancing questions, as well as providing updates on the progress of their case, and allowing the customer to provide new information/updates regarding their completion dates, etc. It will also triage queries to relevant experts if it fails to address the relevant query.
– Researching and developing an Information Fusion system which will manage the API integration with third party software (e.g. Land Registry, Money Laundering, ID checking software, etc), scraping PDFs (e.g. warranties, mortgage offers, finance statements, etc), voice notes (from the client or solicitors), and images and videos (from survey reports, sewage inspection, etc).
– Researching and developing a unique Explainable AI Decision System which will use the fused data to generate letters, forms, reports and create workflows to automate the conveyancing process.
– To act as project lead, to progress the project and ensure milestones are met to a timely manner.
– To embed technology, train and upskill company staff.
– To participate in academic and/or industrial conferences and other events, to disseminate and present research outcomes to the wider community.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
– BSc, MSc or Higher degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or Physics or similar degree or equivalent industry experience.
– Experience of Computer programming in Java and Python
– Experience in front and back-end programming activities
– Deep Knowledge and experience of computational intelligence, generative AI.
– Explainable AI knowledge
– Experience in Information Fusion.
– Experience in Natural Language Processing.
– Commercial data science experience [Desirable].
– Knowledge of, or an interest in, the legal sector [Desirable].
– An understanding of the need to balance academic and commercial outputs.
– Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to a range of audiences.
– Ability to manage expectations in a multi-partner project.
– Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
– Excellent time management skills.
– Excellent command of written and spoken English.

The University of Essex in partnership with WS Strategic offers an exciting opportunity to a graduate with the relevant skills and knowledge to develop a novel Explainable AI (XAI) based support system, which will receive different information formats (free text, images, videos and acoustic signals), enabling a seamless customer experience of legal processes.
