Job description

We are seeking a PhD graduate who will be responsible for the development of a large language model (LLM) base framework to support construction teams with relevant operational data collection and processing. This project aims to transform construction site management through AI powered automation of administrative tasks that currently consume excessive time and are prone to human error. By leveraging LLMs that can process unstructured data in various formats (PDFs, images, scanned documents), we aim to create intelligent systems that extract, organise, and utilise critical site information.

Key objectives include developing AI solutions for smart waste reporting, delivery form automation, incident reporting, and daily progress.

Significant challenges would involve the creation of a bespoke solution which employs AI to streamline construction site management workflows and address site connectivity challenges through lightweight LLMs that run directly on on-site computers without requiring constant internet connectivity or expensive hardware.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in an innovative project in the construction industry, with the benefit of access to academic research, supervision, support and advice.

The Associate will be based in Baxall Construction Ltd’s premises in Paddock Wood and will work closely with the support and guidance of Dr. Christos Efstratiou, Dr. Anna Jordanous from the School of Computing, and Prof. Marialena Nikolopoulou from the School of Architecture and Planning, at the University of Kent. At the end of the fixed term contract, and upon successful completion of the project, there is a possibility that the role could become a permanent full-time position within the business.

As a Data Scientist Research Associate you can expect to be involved in:

  • Exploring the application of LLMs in construction and industrial data reporting processes.
  • Designing and implementing bespoke LLM systems utilising pre-trained models where appropriate.
  • Training Baxall Construction’s team members and appropriate stakeholders on the new systems and models developed during the project

What will you bring to the role?

  • A PhD, (or equivalent qualification) in an area relevant to Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence or closely related disciplines
  • Advanced, up-to-date knowledge of Computer Science and its applications
  • Experience with machine learning and statistical programming frameworks
  • Inter-personal skills and experience working within teams
