Birmingham City University is looking to appoint a high calibre graduate (graduated within the last five years) as a Digital Product Engineer (KTP Associate).

This role presents an exciting opportunity to work in collaboration with leading academics at Birmingham City University, to apply knowledge and technical innovation, delivered on site at the company.

The Digital Product Engineer (KTP Associate) should have a minimum 2.1 university qualification in a relevant subject area and have graduated within the last five years.

This Knowledge Transfer Project (KTP) is co-funded by a grant from Innovate UK and Davicon Mezzanine Floors Ltd. It is therefore essential you understand the fundamentals of the KTP collaboration between a UK business and a University works to deliver benefits for each (the company, the university, and the graduate).

The Digital Product Engineer (KTP Associate) will have access to a wider range of benefits including a personal development budget of £4,344 to upskill during the project.

The successful candidate will be employed by Birmingham City University and seconded to work full-time onsite at Davicon Mezzanine Floors Ltd to deliver the 26-month KTP project in partnership Birmingham City University and Davicon Mezzanine Floors Ltd.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

You will work on:

  • Facilitating stakeholder engagement and defining project scope, risks, and detailed plans across technical and business teams.
  • Designing and implementing a unified parametric BIM/data architecture that links scan data, spatial logic, and product templates.
  • Automating translation of BIM parameters into cost, carbon, and quotation outputs, including user interface and AI-driven prompts.
  • Integrating and deploying an end-to-end digital workflow, validating it on live projects, and leading training, knowledge transfer, and roadmap development.

You will be expected to interact with the senior management, suppliers and clients of the company as well as BCU academics. The role also requires you to apply your knowledge to commercial projects, driving value and making an impact where possible, with the ability to solve problems and create innovative solutions.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • A minimum 2:1 undergraduate qualification in Architecture, Built Environment, Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related discipline Knowledge in programming language
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet and database tools (e.g. Excel, Access)
  • Competence in IT systems and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with parametric design principles visual programming (e.g., Dynamo, Grasshopper, or similar)
  • Experience with design software such as Revit, AutoCAD, or comparable platforms
  • Experience in data integration or ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes
  • Interest in generative design and optimisation workflows
  • Excellent communication skills to express ideas effectively, orally, graphically and in writing to articulate complicated matters between the academics and the company project team members
  • An ability to work to tight deadlines with diligence, attention to detail, and maintain high standards of work
  • An ability and aptitude to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team; and self-management and planning skills to make optimum use of time
  • Strong leadership skills in successfully implementing and embedding new innovations within a company or organisation

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • MSc/PhD or equivalent advanced qualification in a related subject or relevant experience.
  • A good comprehension with practical application of programming languages such as C+, JSON, and Python.
  • Practical experience in manufacturing, warehouse design, or logistics engineering.
  • Knowledge of 3D scanning technologies or photogrammetry.
  • Understanding of Information Management concepts and workflows.
  • Understanding of sustainability metrics and embodied carbon assessment.
  • Project management experience or familiarity with BIM management protocols.
  • Academic acumen to enable successful reporting through research publications in academic journals and marketing/training materials.
  • A clean driving license and a willingness to travel to utility contracts throughout the UK.
  • Practical experience of working in the manufacturing industry.
  • Good knowledge in using AI responsibly.
