Job description
Through the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Programme, Fox Contracts in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast have an exciting and innovative employment opportunity for a dynamic and motivated graduate from a Civil Engineering/Architecture or related discipline to work on a project to develop ways to accurately track and report on whole life carbon emissions in company operations and construction projects, and establish a lower carbon supply chain with demonstrable metrics, to help clients address their net zero goals.
This role is company-based and will be delivered in collaboration with the School of Natural and Built Environment at Queen’s.
The successful candidate will become part of a team within Fox Contracts. Fox Building & Engineering Ltd/TA Fox Contracts is a medium-sized enterprise founded in 1997, operating in the civil engineering sector. They undertake contracts from £2m to £20 million, with an annual turnover of £41m.
As a KTP Associate, you will lead on the delivery of the following key project stages:
Stage 1: Situation analysis of emerging policy targets and client requirements
Stage 2: Establish internal systems for tracking and reporting of corporate carbon emissions
Stage 3: Establish internal systems for tracking and reporting of project specific carbon emissions
Stage 4: Work with suppliers and sub-contractors to establish carbon tracking in the material supply chain and identify low carbon
options
Stage 5: Trial the approach to whole-life carbon tracking on a selected project.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
1. At least a 2:1 Honours Degree in a construction related discipline (Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical & Electrical
Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction, etc). Note that a candidate with a 2.1 Honours Degree in Environmental
Engineering, Environmental Management or similar with significant experience in the construction sector will also be considered.
2. Demonstrable ability to undertake numerical calculations, such as modelling, calculation and quantitative and qualitative
analysis at a reasonably high level.
3. Knowledge of carbon management policies*. Please note: *may be demonstrated through the completion of a module, student
project or placement.
4. Knowledge of carbon modelling and/or accounting and best practice within the field*. Please note: *may be demonstrated
through the completion of a module, student project or placement.
5. Understanding of BIM modelling processes and concepts.
6. Completion of a relevant research project or student placement. Applicants should indicate how their experience could be
applied to this post.
7. Experience in working as part of a group or team.
8. Ability to think logically, create solutions and make informed decisions.
9. A high level of numeracy and the ability to interpret data.
10. Good oral, written and presentation skills.
11. High level of IT skills.
12. Self-motivated, capable of working independently, with a drive and ambition to succeed.
13. Ability to work effectively as a member of a group.
14. Enthusiasm for research/project area.
15. Well organised, attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines.
16. An interest in staying with the Company (Associates are normally invited to apply for permanent positions).
17. Ability to take part in Associate management courses (requiring two one-week periods in England).
18. Willing/able to travel throughout the UK and Ireland and abroad as necessary.
19. Ability to attend workplace Fox Contracts, Omagh, Co. Tyrone on a daily basis, and other work locations as required.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA:
1. Hold, or be about to obtain, a higher degree in a relevant discipline.
2. Have knowledge and experience of sustainable construction and carbon reduction in construction.
3. Relevant experience of working with relevant environmental or energy management systems.
4. Relevant experience in the use of carbon calculators.
5. Relevant experience in the use of BIM modelling
6. Relevant experience of carbon modelling, accounting, foot printing and knowledge of the latest best practice within the field.
7. Ability to deliver training and follow-up support to operatives.
8. Ability to influence people effectively.
9. Tenacious and committed to achieving goals.
