Project description

The University of Essex, in partnership with PG Rix, offers an exciting opportunity to a graduate with the relevant skills and knowledge to embed crop science expertise within the company to enable them to develop a novel screening test for Fusarium in onion seeds and seedlings, with future applications for the expertise to other crop and disease types.

About the business

Situated alongside the beautiful Stour Valley on the Essex Suffolk border, the Rix family have been farming for three generations since 1968. They grow and supply crops including onions, potatoes, sugar beet and cereal crops. They aim to maintain and enhance the environment through good agricultural practice and integrated farming techniques, and produce and supply over 66,000 tonnes of crops grown over 2,350 hectares.

P.G. Rix turnover year end February 2024 was £15.7 million with an operating profit of £3.51 million. The onion crop totals around 35,000 tonnes each year and accounts for one third of total revenues (£5 million).

PG Rix are already active in research and development, being testbed partners for other research consortia tackling Fusarium and other challenges. Having had this experience of driving innovation in farming, PG Rix are now looking to develop in-house capability to tackle emerging challenges in crop health and disease and the KTP forms an important part of this strategy.
