Job description

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate position at Epwin Window Systems offers a chance to enhance simulation capabilities in uPVC compound blending operations. You will implement Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations to optimise processes, targeting annual savings of £280,000. Responsibilities include creating and refining models to predict particle behaviour, calibrating them to 95% accuracy, and establishing sensor systems for real-time data acquisition. You will execute validation trials, optimise processes (e.g., improving blade geometry), and lead initiatives to reduce mixing time by 15%, waste by 25%, and unplanned downtime by 30%. Additionally, you will design a training program to enhance internal staff competency in simulation software and establish communication channels for a data-driven culture of process improvement, contributing to the manufacturing efficiency at Epwin Window Systems.

Experience/Qualifications

A Master’s degree in engineering, physics, materials science, computational science, or a related field is required, along with technical competency in computational methods or engineering simulation, supported by a strong mathematical background and practical experience. Key skills needed include technical writing, clear communication, teamwork, project management, and an understanding of particle dynamics and process control.

Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree, experience with Discrete Element Method or similar simulation software, and knowledge in Computational Fluid Dynamics. Additional experience in process control systems, industrial optimisation, and technology transfer is beneficial. Familiarity with sensor systems, polymer processing, digital twin concepts, and manufacturing quality assurance is also advantageous.

Candidates should demonstrate attention to detail, motivation for continuous learning, and adaptability to technical challenges. Effective communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders, a proactive problem-solving approach, and a strong analytical mindset are essential

Project description

Present project progress and technical findings at Local Management Committee meetings every two months, covering milestones, risk status, and optimisation opportunities. Assess commercial impact by quantifying improvements and identifying further development opportunities. Contribute to frameworks for collaboration between Harper Adams University and Epwin, including student projects and research. Maintain professional conduct that reflects both organisations’ standards at external events. Engage in professional development through KTP modules, conferences, and technical training to enhance competency during the project.
