Project description

Wafer Ltd plans to transform its manufacturing by developing a smart, connected, and scalable production environment. This Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) will support the company’s goal to expand market share across the UK, Ireland, and Northern Europe, aiming for 15% annual revenue growth and to double net profit margins from 3% to 6% within five years.

The project will introduce digital technologies, including improved factory modelling, IoT (connecting machines and sensors), SCADA (real-time monitoring enhanced through NWRCs 5G and Narrow Band IoT (NBIOT) laboratory testbed), cobotics (robots working with people), and digital twins (virtual models of processes). These will deliver better visibility, faster decision-making, and reduced downtime, tackling current limits in capacity and cost.

Wafer Ltd has recorded 13% growth so far this financial year and projects a net pre-tax profit of £750,000 for 2024/25. New retail packs and products are being launched to reach large supermarkets in the UK and Northern Europe and better capitalise on seasonal demand. However, existing systems limit the ability to scale.

The KTP will bring in technical expertise to modernise production and expand capacity. It will help manage growing demand, support product launches, and develop new skills within the business, ensuring improvements are sustained.

About the business

Wafer Enterprises Ltd, also known as Wafer Ltd, is a long-established food manufacturing business based in Skeoge Food Park, Beraghmore Road, Derry/Londonderry. The company was incorporated in February 1989 and has been under the leadership of Neil Doherty, with ownership linked to Wafer Holdings Limited. It operates as a specialist producer and supplier to the ice cream and confectionery sector across Ireland and the UK.

The company’s product range includes ice cream cones of various types such as classic, waffle and dipped cones, as well as mixes, flavours, inclusions, toppings, sauces and accessories. Wafer Ltd also supplies packaging and related goods to parlours and wholesalers, positioning itself as a one-stop provider for the ice cream trade.

Starting with semi-automatic production methods and a narrow product offering, the business has grown significantly through automation and acquisitions, such as the purchase of Fiesta Cone Company in 1994. Over time, it has broadened its product portfolio, constantly innovating with new cone styles, flavourings and value-added lines to meet changing market demands.

Today, Wafer Ltd employs around 59 people and continues to expand its operations as a key small-to-medium enterprise within Northern Ireland’s food manufacturing sector. It is registered under industry classifications for biscuit, wafer and milk product manufacturing, and operates in compliance with food safety and regulatory standards. The company has built a strong reputation for quality, reliability and innovation, with its family-led management structure helping to sustain a culture of continuous improvement and customer focus.
