Job description

The successful candidate will undertake a 30-month collaborative project between Red Stag Materials Limited and the University of Aberdeen, jointly funded by Innovate UK and Red Stag Materials Limited. RedStag operates within the UK highway construction and maintenance sector, supplying essential materials to local authorities, public bodies, and highway maintenance contractors across the UK. The main role of the KTP Associate is to lead on the development of innovative road bonding products.

The role will involve acquiring and applying specialised knowledge in production of a sustainable road bonding material, experimental testing, and understanding the physical, chemical and mechanical behaviour of the produced road bonding material. The Associate will master the optimisation of production methods while integrating multidisciplinary insights, as well as challenging industry norms with innovative approaches.

The Associate role includes balancing independent research and experimentation with the need to provide regular progress updates to both academic and business supervisors. They will also be required to communicate complex technical concepts to a diverse range of stakeholders, including engineers, designers, potential customers, and manufacturers.

Project description

To develop innovative, sustainable materials from waste biomass and organic waste to replace petroleum-based bitumen emulsion in road construction. The KTP will use chemical and physical processes to achieve comparable physical and mechanical properties, ensure a robust supply chain and maintain price points in line with existing products.
