Job description
We invite applications for a self-starting individual to drive an exciting partnership to identify, develop and implement an evidence-based quality improvement (QI) model for application into the veterinary sector, initially in farm practice but developing more widely.
QI is now widely adopted in human healthcare settings and involves a systematic and coordinated approach to improving practice. The use of QI techniques in the veterinary sector is gaining momentum; however, no sector specific, evidence-based QI model exists.
This role offers a significant opportunity to transform the quality of veterinary care for better outcomes and more efficient and sustainable practice. You will be exposed to high-profile, influential stakeholders, across veterinary organisations and practice groups, providing an ideal opportunity to build your professional networks, while also raising your profile as an emerging leader for veterinary QI.
This post is:
- Full time, fixed-term for 34 months. A permanent position may be available on project completion.
- Hybrid, with approx. 1 day per week travel (to London, or elsewhere as required)
This is funded through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP); a UK Government scheme promoting sustained and mutually beneficial relationships between universities and industry.
You will manage the project, fully supported by leading academic experts within University of Nottingham’s School of Veterinary Medicine and Science and Nottingham University Business School. You will be employed by the University of Nottingham but be part of the RCVS Knowledge team, working at the RCVS Knowledge central London offices at least one day a week, with flexibility to work remotely for some of the time.
Working directly with RCVS Knowledge’s Head of Quality Improvement, you will create, test and deliver a QI model to enhance the running of veterinary practice, while considering commercial requirements and clinical challenges. You will interact regularly with RCVS Knowledge’s subject matter and marketing and communications teams. You will be supported by staff at the University of Nottingham to conduct high quality research.
Project description
The aim of this project is to identify, develop and implement an evidence-based, systematic quality improvement model, for large-scale application into the veterinary sector. It will transform the quality of veterinary care, leading to better patient outcomes, and more efficient and sustainable healthcare systems.
About the business

We are RCVS Knowledge, a charity with a mission to advance the quality of veterinary care for the benefit of animals, the public and society.
We empower and support veterinary teams to provide evidence-based, quality care and improved animal health and welfare outcomes.
Our vision is simple: healthier animals, people and planet.
Our mission is to advance the quality of veterinary care for the benefit of animals, the public, and society.
We are driven by our purpose: to empower and support veterinary teams to provide evidence-based, quality care and improved animal health and welfare outcomes.
Our work
Veterinary teams face many challenges in accessing up to date knowledge and applying it in practice. To support them and deliver our mission we:
- Create and share practical support and tools to help veterinary teams and other animal health professionals deliver better animal health and welfare outcomes in a structured and sustained way.
- Provide veterinary science and animal health resources to help busy veterinary professionals stay up to date with the most relevant research and apply it in practice.
- Curate and raise awareness of veterinary history to ensure that veterinary care today and in the future is built on knowledge and understanding of the past.
We are the charity partners of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).
Our strength is in working together with veterinary teams, animal owners and all those involved in animal health to advance the quality of veterinary care.
